Stop 2 - Asia! Check in before fri 14th sept
Welcome to ASIA!
Take a deep breath and let your senses explode. From ancient farming villages in India to the futuristic cityscape of Tokyo, Asia provides such variety and contrast it would take many lifetimes to even start to scratch the surface.
Above all, Asia is a spiritual place - infused with the gods of past and present: the ancient spirits of the land and the family, the teachings of Buddhism, the deities of Christianity and Hinduism and the rules of Islam. Across the region, scented smoke swirls from millions of joss sticks placed in offering at the many shrines and temples the faithful use to meditate and pray.
You have the choice of three different destinations within Asia, either Japan, India or Russia.
You will not be disappointed ,as if you read below you will see that all three of the countries are equally amazing. Seats are limited so put your name down quickly for a tickets to the country of your choice. (Once all the seats have been filled, more seats will be opened!) Each country offers a different set of criteria to scrap. You will only scrap ONE country on this stop!
Check in will be open until midnight friday Sept 14th! Criteria will be revealed Saturday 15th Sept. If you miss the check-in deadline, please pm Sarah (sarah), Anthea (redant) , or myself (vickstar) to have a country allocated to you!

Japan
Japan is an island nation located in eastern Asia in the Pacific Ocean, to the east of China, Russia, North Korea and South Korea. It is an archipelago that is made up of over 6,500 islands, the largest of which are Honshu, Hokkaido, Kyushu and Shikoku. Japan is one of the world's largest countries by population and it has one of the world's largest economies.
Japan is a land of contrasts.
Ultramodern skyscrapers tower over ancient shrines and temples. The latest styles from Paris or Milan are tastefully displayed alongside traditional silk kimonos. The high-speed Shinkansen bullet train thunders past a medieval castle that still looks fit enough to house a feudal lord and his devoted retainers.
Are these signs of a culture that cannot make up its mind? Hardly. Although high technology and modern conveniences have come to dominate Japanese life, the past is alive and well in the so-called Land of the Rising Sun.
Japanese Temples are the most sacred places that represent the faith of the Japanese people. Temples in Japan also reflect the cultural heritage, and safeguard the tradition of Japan. Almost each and every municipal area incorporates at least one Japanese temple, while great cultural regions include thousands of temples.
It might come as a surprise to many that there is a still a lot of nature in Japan. Many people often refer to the seemingly endless urban concrete sprawl, a certain image that Japan is certainly famous for, but at the same time the propensity of its people to gather in large metropolitan areas has allowed for a relatively quiet and natural countryside all the same. Many species of flowers, sub-tropical plants and insects are indigenous to Japan, many of which exist in Kyushu, Okinawa and the Ryukyu Chains. There are also at least 6 species of mammals and 5 species of non-migratory birds indigenous to the archipelago.
India
India bristles with an eclectic melange of ethnic groups; an intoxicating cultural cocktail for the traveller. With such astonishing diversity, you will be taken on a journey that will linger in your mind long after you’ve left her shores.
Bamboozling. There’s simply no other word that captures the enigma that is India. With an ability to inspire, frustrate, thrill and confound all at once, India presents an extraordinary spectrum of encounters for the traveller. Some of these can be challenging, particularly for the first-time visitor: the poverty is confronting, Indian bureaucracy can be exasperating and the crush of humanity sometimes turns the simplest task into an energy-zapping battle. Even veteran travellers find their sanity frayed at some point, yet this is all part of the India experience. Love it or loathe it – and most visitors see-saw between the two – India will jostle your entire being. It’s a place that fires the imagination and stirs the soul like nowhere else on earth.
India is set to become the world's most populated country after its population climbed to 1.21billion this year, census officials have revealed.
The South Asian nation - second only to China in number of people - added 181million to its numbers in the past decade alone, according to C. Chandramouli, the census commissioner.
Despite growth slowing in India for the first time in 90 years, that increase alone is nearly the population of Brazil.
United Nations projections show that India could overtake China and its 1.34billion people as the world's most populous nation by 2030, though Chandramouli said a more rigorous analysis of data would be needed before India made its own projections.
India's population is now nearly equal to the combined populations of the United States, Indonesia, Brazil, Japan, Bangladesh, Pakistan.
India is the world's largest consumer of gold, accounting for 26 percent of the world's demand.
In India gold is historically and culturally tied to the concepts of wealth and prosperity.
Consumer demand continues to remain high as Indians believe gold offers the best protection against inflation.
Russia
For centuries the world has wondered what to believe about Russia. The country has been reported variously as a land of unbelievable riches and indescribable poverty, cruel tyrants and great minds, generous hospitality and meddlesome bureaucracy, beautiful ballets and industrial monstrosities, pious faith and unbridled hedonism. These eternal Russian truths coexist in equally diverse landscapes of icy tundra and sun-kissed beaches, dense silver birch and fir forests and deep and mysterious lakes, snow-capped mountains and swaying grasslands – those famous steppes. Factor in ancient fortresses, luxurious palaces, swirly spired churches and lost-in-time wooden villages and you’ll begin to see why Russia is simply amazing.
In terms of territory, Russia is the world's largest country. With a total area of 17 million square kilometres! Russia covers about one-eighth of the world's land surface. Russia is 60 percent larger than the world's second-largest country, Canada.
Russia's great breadth of territory includes many different geographical regions. These include areas of permafrost (areas of eternal ice) in Siberia and the Far North as well as taiga and steppes (vast grassland).
Russia is home to one of the world's most beautiful cities, St. Petersburg. St. Petersburg is the most western city of russia. It is famous for it's numerous gardens, parks, high art, lavish architecture, wild nightlife, an extraordinary history and rich cultural traditions that have inspired and nurtured some of the modern world's greatest literature, music, and visual art.
