Product giveaway #2
Okay girls we had so much fun with yesterdays giveaway, so lets have some more shall we.......How about a couple of sheets of prima bling (8.5 X 10" ones)???? Sounding good....
Now how many of us have made kids birthday cakes or just cakes in general??? Well today we would like to know which of those creations took the longest and why????
I made a merry-go-round cake for one of my girls parties....you know the one...pink, lollies all over it and little wooden horses on sticks suspended from the roof of the thing.....well it took me 4 hours to decorate and the guests were arriving and I suddenly realised that I was standing there in my nighty and dressing gown My DIL Elisha was the first to arrive and shooed me off to the shower and finished the cake, another 1/2 hour NEVER AGAIN.....been asked several times to re-create it.....no way!!!!
So lets hear it for cake today!!
xoxo

Re: Product giveaway #2
I LOVE making birthday cakes!! The one that took the longest was Domeniks, mostly because I designed him off a soft toy so had to draw him up first, and then try to make it off the 2D drawing (not as easy as I thought it was going to be LOL - lots of cutting and re-cutting and then fiddling again!!!) Plus I use mudcake for our cakes (yummo) I find it easier to mould but they have to be made the day/night before cutting - very last minute!!! So, I think Dom's puppy cake would have taken around 8 hours all up at a guess...
Here's some pics of his puppy dog cake
And how's this for a mud cake!!!
And here are some other cakes I've done too....
Kahli's 6th birthday - fairy castle
William's 9th Birthday - DS
Christmas Party 2009
Neice's First Birthday - carousel
Hmm there's more but I can't find all the pics.. and probably shouldn't bore you too much LOL Oh and there's LOTS of disasters too - not game to show some of them here ROFL.

Re: Product giveaway #2
Your cakes all look wonderful girls!
I've made heaps of birthday cakes for my 2 kids when they were younger but only have 2 (not very good) photos on my computer. Most of them were made before we had a digital camera. And these 2 were probably the easiest to make.
My son's 1st birthday cake was a house with a garden, pathway and a fence - all decorated with biscuits and lollies. It must have taken me more than 4 hours to do. Come to think of it, most of the cakes I made took me wayyyyyyyyyy too long to decorate. Thank goodness, I only have 2 kids.

I made this cake too for Ranis' 1st B'day, well not this one, I stole this off Treens, will add mine when I get home from work. I don't really know how long mine took because I made it over the whole day. I baked the cakes when Rani had her first sleep. Done the icing when both kids went down for a sleep then decorated it that night when they both went to bed. Was up til 2am though. Was a shame to have to put the knife into it the next day. Have a few others on the computer at home. Love your puppy Treens.

Re: Product giveaway #2
Mine would have to be the spider cake I made Randall for his 3rd birthday. I have a hard copy photo and will scan and upload later.
It was made form two round cakes. the back one left as is the front one you had to shape the front of it for the face.
Then coated in choccy icing with coconut mixed in for the furry its. Choc melts with red tube icing for the eyes. The legs were drawn with melted choclate on baking paper and then stood up.
Wasn't that hard really but probably the most involved cake I have made.
The other would be the chocolate crackle/LCM witches hat I had for Randalls 8th birthday. It fell on friday 13th sowe went with the theme. I made a chocolate LCM type mix (complete with FLuff mmmm) and then had to shape it into a witches hat. Not easy until it starts to set a bit. DIdn't have a mould for it either.

Re: Product giveaway #2
WOW!!! You gals are sooooooo talented...
As you can imagine from my kitchen catastrophies in "Giveaway #1" I am pretty darn useless in the kitchen... so when it comes to birthday cakes I rely on our local bakery... (their cakes are divine)...
I do have a funny cake related story tho...
When we went in to order the cake for dd's first birthday (six years ago) the lady in the shop took our details then asked my husband if he was related to Pam and Graham (his parents). When he told her yes and that he was the youngest of their clan, the lady nearly jumped over the counter with excitement...
she called out the back for the baker and other staff to come out and said "look everybody, it's little Pam and Graham's little Peter!!! Hasn't he grown up?!"
Apparently "little Peter" used to accompany his mum to the store each week, but hadn't been in for over 20 years...
The bakery had made every cake for each member of dh's birthday for decades and now they were starting on a whole new generation... and they've continued making them to the same delicious recipe so we all look forward to sharing cake when anyone in the family celebrates turning one year older... (which is pretty often with all of us living in the same area and more little monkey's climbing on to our family tree at a steady pace)...
So, I have no great stories of cake baking marathons...
But I do have a "recipe" for the fastest, most delicious cake that can be whipped up (literally) for morning tea and is certain to impress!
Ingredients:
1 x double unfilled sponge from Woolies
1 x 600ml carton of whipping cream
1 x packet of soft icing sugar (and sifter)
1 x punnet of fresh strawberries
1 x can of grated Lindt chocolate
Directions:
1. Using a very sharp long carving knife slice evenly through each sponge (creating 4 thin cakes).
2. Sift 1 cup of icing sugar into a bowl.
3. Wash strawberries and slice four into halves lengthways (to go on the top of the cake) and the rest into thin slices (to go in between the layers).
3. Using electric beaters whip the carton of cream, adding the icing sugar as you go. Whip until very thick.
4. Spread a good amount of cream onto the first (thin) sponge layer, place thinly sliced strawberries on top of the cream, then spinkle with the grated Lindt chocolate, and finally sift with icing sugar.
5. Place next sponge on top and repeat step 4 (above).
6. Continue until you have placed the fourth (thin) sponge on top.
7. For the final layer spread a thick layer of cream over the top of the cake (sides too if you like).
8. Decorate with the halved strawberries, grated Lindt chocolate and sift with all over with heaps of icing sugar.
9. Place in the fridge to chill before serving.
10.Enjoy!

Thanks for the lend Treens. This is the cake I made for Rani's first birthday.
This is Jay's first birthday cake, very plain.
Jay's second birthday cake.
Jay's third birthday cake.
and he had a joint mothers group party with this cake.
He has had a few other cakes from mothers group parties but I didn't make them.
I would say the carousel took the longest but the motorbike was harder because it couldn't get the icing black and I hate working with butter icing.

Wowsers - you guys are all soooo talented. I don't do cakes at all...but one year DS asked for cakes at school on his birthday. I iced them all in different colours and put each kids initial on each one....took a whole of about 20 minutes. Then one year I decided I would make DHs....this is it...
If you want to read it, the blog post pertaining to this cake is here http://tramenglish.blogspot.com/2009/03/more-ramblings.html.
