Just a Little Question! Empty Just a Little Question!

Post by Vicki Thu Sep 10, 2009 8:23 am

I'm a little worried as I was unable to breast feed for more than a week, just couldn't keep up, feeds at every hour and a half were killing me and my breasts...so we now have her on formula. We started her on S26 Newborn and found that she was having trouble, constipation wise, so now we have her on a Formula designed to help with constipation, Novaleac. Only thing is now she is grunting and nothing seems to be happening. I was up last night a few times with her and am a little concerned.

Did anyone have this experience with formula? Call me a worry wart but I have made an appointment with the doctors for this afternoon, something just doesn't seem right. I just hope it's nothing major like with Cooper and we spent a year taking trips to brisbane hospital for 3 operations. Could it be this new formula is too strong?

I'm not sure Victoria.....but the Dr's is always the best advise. I didn't use formula with my 2 girls at all. I did with my boys but lots of things have changed from those days. The constipation seems to be a problem always....I'll be praying for you, sorry I'm not much help at all!!

Hey V, i'm not much help cos i have breastfed both of mine, but i definately understand giving up after 1 1/2hr feeds!! Thats just nuts!! Smile

Anyway, i have heard that formula can cause constipation as it is soo much heavier, but have you tried calling the Child and Youth Health Parent Hotline for advice?? You probably have there number but if you don't it is 1300 364 100. They may be able to offer some advice for you! Smile

I had the very same experience with the breast feeding and I ended up using formula for both DDs. I had a very positive experience with the formula and they slept like a dream after their bottles (and grew like weeds!). The doctor seems like the best bet - hopefully you have a good one though, 'cause they can be very hard to find over here!!! I didn't get any help at all from the health line (Healthwest it's called over here) - they were useless and unsupportive. Just a Little Question! Icon_evil

I hope everything's okay - could be a phase, I don't know if this is sorta similar, but when I was in Japan, I drank the tap water (which is fine) but it took my tummy a good week to get used to it (it made the loudest sounds!) but then it was fine and I lived there for 3 months drinking the tap water!

I hope I've been a little help! I know how despairing it can be with a little baby! Just a Little Question! Icon_smile

I just thought of something else, with the constipation, I assume that you've given bottles of cooled boiled water too?

The doc told me there's nothing much medical wise, just got to help her through it, a teaspoon of sugar in her bottle, some drops I got from the chemist, diluted prune or orange juice instead of a bottle once a day...she seems to have settled down this morning and hopefully with sleep most of the day since she was up most of the night....will give me time to scrap the first cyber crop challenge and the bohemian monthly challenge Smile Well that's what i'm hoping anyway!

I'm hoping this time i can breastfeed properly.... but not going to push it....

I tried s26 but wasn't good for my other two.... I used NAN - and found I had no troubles.... not sure if that will help or not!

Yeah i have previously used nan and karicare so thought i would try s26...i think no matter what formula i choose if she's going to get constipated she's going to get constipated, today she was a lot better, a lot less cranky...

I was hoping to breastfeed but feeding every hour and a half was just too exhausting for me, at least i breastfed for a week so she got some goodness Smile and some is better than none!

Post by malinda Fri Sep 11, 2009 3:28 pm

hey, I used formula with my DD after BF for 3 months...and my mum who's a midwife said not to use S26 as it is renowned for constipation...I used Karicare and found it a dream...and Isy had thickened as she had a reflux....

glad she is better today....

have you tried moving her legs up and down when she is lying on her back to help...

My granddaughter was having the same problem with constipation on formula and my DIL was told to use a formula that didn't have Iron added to it and she found Karicare without the added iron worked for her. Hope this helps!

V, glad to hear Monique is doing a bit better today. I'm sure it will all settle down in no time, just as soon as you both find your natural routines. Just a Little Question! Icon_biggrin
